Rotating basketball experiment in Flash

I have been hired to make a basketball game in Flash, so I started by making a nice ball. The game I am making won't be in anaglyph, but I put some anaglyph basketball players and cheerleaders behind the ball for this experiment. I'll keep you posted on the progress of the game, as I continue to work on it.

Gamma 3D

Big news for game developers. Kokoromi, a Montreal-based collective of game makers, has announced that stereoscopic games will be the theme of their third annual GAMMA event ("GAMMA" stands for Game Art Montreal, somehow), to be held Wed., Nov. 19 at the Society for Arts and Technology center, in conjunction with the Montreal International Game Summit.

The highlight of the event will be a curated show of 3-D games, and the group is seeking submissions from game developers to be judged. The competition is open to anyone in the world. You don't have to be Canadian, or attend the show, to submit a game for consideration. To be considered, the game must use red/cyan anaglyph in a way that is integral to the gameplay, not just as a superfluous addition. Other technical specifications can be found on the Gamma 3D page, and questions are answered in this forum discussion.

If you're planning to attend the event, there is hotel and airline information for travelers.

If you're planning to enter the competition, the deadline for entries is Wed., Oct. 15. That's kind of tight for a slowpoke like me, so I don't know if I'll have anything to submit myself by then. But I am looking forward to seeing what comes out of this show. Expect to see a whole lot of quality 3-D games in November!

Bree Fountain anaglyph, by LOTRO player IceTeaMan

"LOTRO," or The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar, is a multiplayer online game set in the fantasy world of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth. It requires Windows XP or Vista, and costs money, though you can try it free for 14 days.

The game itself is not in anaglyph, but one player calling himself "IceTeaMan" made five anaglyph screen shots from the game, and posted them to the LOTRO forum, which is where I found them. Click on any of these thumbnail pictures to see the full-resolution images. My thanks to IceTeaMan for making and sharing these anaglyphs, and kudos to the LOTRO developers for creating such a picturesque game.

Something for your brain:

3-D Brain

Looking over my traffic logs, I noticed some strange search engine queries coming this way. Searches for "Swell level 8 walkthrough" and "Swell game level 10 answer," and similar phrases, have been finding their way here. There were so many of them, and from so many countries, that I had to find out why.

About the same time I launched Swell 3D, somebody in Finland launched an online riddle game named "Swell." Swell presents a series of brain-teasers for players to solve, and the puzzles tend to become more challenging the further you progress. Swell is not in 3-D or anything, so it's not the sort of thing I would normally write about here.

But I feel compassion for you searchers, who just need a little help with your riddles, so I made this thread for you. Comments are open. If you are stuck on any level of Swell, just leave a comment here, explaining where you are having trouble, and I'll happily give you a hint. (No cheats, you understand, just hints.) When you're done with Swell, go get yourself some 3-D glasses, and enjoy the rest of the cool art on Swell 3D.

And for the rest of you, who come for 3-D stuff, I made this anaglyph human brain image. I converted it from a stock illustration by Sebastian Kaulitzki.

Nanosaur 2 in 3D anaglyph screenshot

"Nanosaur II: Hatchling" is a 3-D game from Pangea Software, and (as far as I know) still the only commercial game for the Macintosh with stereo graphics. It's not really the sort of game I personally enjoy -- the first-person 3D perspective makes me dizzy -- so I recuse myself from judging the gameplay as such. You can read reviews from more qualified gamers for that.

But I can judge the 3-D graphics. Since the title was published four years ago, I honestly wasn't expecting the graphics to be so good. I was pleasantly surprised. I can confirm that all of the anaglyph screen shots posted to the publisher's website are accurate portrayals of the game. The prehistoric world is so well rendered, I wished I could just stroll along and look at it for awhile, rather than fly through it and explode from hitting a tree. Maybe the next release could have a "never mind the game" mode, just for me.

Nanosaur 2 costs $34.95 on disc, which comes with 3-D glasses, or $19.95 to download (but you'll have to get your own 3-D glasses).

If you just want to try it out, there is a free demo you can play without buying it. That's what I did.

Cubicute, online 3D anaglyph game

Cubicute is a simple online puzzle game by Christian Zienert. The object of the game is to bring all nine squares "upstairs," or to their largest size. You do this by clicking on the squares. When you click on a square, it changes not only itself, but also any horizontally or vertically adjacent squares. For example, I'll tell you how to beat level one: click once on the center square. You'll have to solve the remaining levels for yourself.

The graphics are in 3-D anaglyph, and 3-D glasses do enhance the game, but are in no way necessary to enjoy it. I played it several times without the glasses, and it plays just fine.

I would have expected a game like this to have been done in Flash, but it ain't so. This game is entirely coded in good old Javascript and HTML.

I managed to beat the first ten levels, but was stumped by level 11.

UPDATE: I have beaten Cubicute! Here is a screen shot of me about to score my 344th point, on Level 48, the last level of the game.

Cubicute high score

cheese_quest_3d.gif

Cartoon Network has a side-scroller game in anaglyph 3-D. It's called Cheese Quest 3D. I played it for about a minute, and I thought I should blog about it to tell you how much I liked it!

Not much.
