Anaglyphic Jean-Paul Sartre enjoys Swell 3D on his desktop computer

I would like to thank Écrans for choosing Swell 3D as their site of the day. Écrans is an online supplement to Libération, the Paris newspaper founded by Jean-Paul Sartre. Above is my anaglyphic rendition of Mr. Sartre enjoying Swell 3D on his desktop computer.

OCCC Student looks at Swell 3D

The Pioneer is the student newspaper at Oklahoma City Community College, where I am an adjunct professor of Graphic Communications. On page six of this week's issue is a story by Matt Montgomery about Swell 3D, headlined "Professor ventures into 3-D world."

The lovely photo above, of student Mikaela Allen enjoying Swell 3D, accompanied the story, but I converted it to 3-D here.

To Matt and the Pioneer staff, thank you for the story!

Well, today is the day...
Upgrade from Movable Type 4.1 to Movable Type Pro 4.2 today
On August 13, Six Apart released a new 4.2 version of Movable Type. "Movable Type Pro" is what they're calling it, and it's supposed to be packed with cool new features. I haven't upgraded yet, but today is the day I'm going to try it. Today, if everything goes right, Swell 3D will be powered by MT Pro 4.2.

I'm telling you now, as a sort of warning. If you get here and things don't look right, if the templates are all messed up, if pages aren't loading correctly, if content is missing, it just means I'm still trying to get the upgrade to work. Thank you for your patience.

I made the little doodle above in Neave Anaglyph, because it's fun and easy. (I thought I should do one thing today that is fun and easy.)

UPDATE 4:42 p.m.: It worked! I'm on MT Pro now! That wasn't bad at all. If you spot anything not working right, please just let me know in the comments.

In my continuing quest to improve Swell 3D, last night I made little square thumbnail images for all the entries. These pictures will make it easier and more fun to navigate through the content of the website. Look, here are some now!

The woman in the white skirt Where to find 3-D bugs, insects, and spiders Flash 3-D Experiment 06: anaglyph cards with PV3D "Before the Bath" - Antique 3-D Cheesecake No. 1 Tour Somerset and Europe in 3-D with Alan Woollard Journey to the Center of the Earth, 3D movie still Turn 2D painting into 3D anaglyph with depth map

Monster's Guide to V 48hours Bjork's 3-D video, "Wanderlust" Flash 3-D Experiment 04: anaglyph with Papervision3D Phenomenal stereo photography, by khnemo Flash 3-D Experiment 03: Scripted scaling Pro-X red/blue anaglyph glasses Playing with Google Sketchup

Eventually, the thumbnails will be incorporated into several navigation controls. For now, you can see all of them on the Archives page. See, isn't that better than just a bunch of text links?

I had planned this improvement for some time, but my stumbling block was Movable Type; it seems they won't let you add custom fields to the entry data unless you pay them $300, which I am not about to do. So I had to figure out a good way to associate a thumbnail image with each entry without having a custom field for it.

Hannah Montana on TV in 3D

I suppose everyone who needs to know this already knows it. But just in case you were wondering, the "Disney Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus Best of Both Worlds Concert" is broadcast tonight, Saturday, July 26, 2008, in stunning 3-D, on the Disney Channel, at 8:00 p.m., or 7:00 Central Time.

If you are planning to see the show, I hope you have your 3-D glasses already, whether they came free from Wal-Mart, or bound in this week's TV Guide, or some other source. If not, there is still just barely time to make your own. Enjoy the show.

And after the show? Keep the glasses! There is an abundance of really cool games, videos, photos, and movies to look at in 3-D. This site, Swell 3D, is a place to find them. Add it to your bookmarks, and check back here.

AppScout.com is an online publication from Ziff Davis, the folks who put out PC Magazine, and a slew of high-tech verbiage elsewhere. Writer Geoff Fox just posted a story about Swell 3D in AppScout's "Cool Web Sites" category. Thanks, Geoff!

If you are coming here from there, my advice would be to click on those "Categories" in the sidebar to see all the archived content, organized neatly into Sites, Experiments, Pictures, Tips, Glamour, and so forth.

(But if you don't have 3-D glasses, you should go here first.)

Have fun!

In order to claim myself as the owner of this blog on Technorati, I have to create a post with a link to my Technorati profile. This is that post.

Here, then, is a link to my Technorati Profile!

Sorry, that couldn't have been very interesting to read. Tell you what I'll do: here's a nice picture of a fighter jet. That's exciting, isn't it?

Oh, and if you want to add Swell 3D to your own Technorati favorites, here's a button that should make that happen:
